My tiny speech seemed to light a fire under everyone as they all stood up and nodded at me, steel in their eyes.

“Everyone pack up,” Triton said firmly. “If we do this, we do this now. We leave at dusk. Bring as much food as you can carry and leave any nonessentials behind. Let’s move, heroes!”

With a frim plan established and orders given, the room cleared out quickly until I was alone with Aylin and her mother. My Stars was still looking at her mother with a lost expression.

“Mother, are you really coming with us?” she asked helplessly. “You know how dangerous this mission is!”

Despite her daughter’s worry, the queen did not back down. “I fled before, too weak to stand up for the people. I will not hide again, but the rest is up to you.” She stared at Aylin, her words sharp and pointed as she tested her daughter, “Will you be strong enough to lead and protect your people, Aylin Ajlal? Will you be the queen that they need?”

I watched as the brilliant white markings on Aylin’s skin seemed to pulse with her breathing. She cast a glance towards me, and I gave her a nod of confidence. Maybe that was the last signal she needed because she straightened up, holding her head high and her back straight.

“I will bring our people back into the gods’ favor and free them from the darkness that has held them captive for so long.”

Aylin had taken the test and aced it. The strength shining from within her made me see the kind of queen she would be. Kind and strong. I had the desire to kneel at her feet and worship her.

Tirsa looked pleased with that response and cast a small nod towards her daughter.

“I have no doubt you will, my daughter… my queen.”

And then it was just me and Aylin standing in the room. So I let myself do what I wanted. I scooped Aylin into my arms, ignoring her short startled yelp as I pulled her in for a deep, passionate kiss. She quickly adjusted and urged me on as she deepened the kiss, sparks of desire flowing through me. After a long moment drinking deeply of one another, she pulled away, slightly breathless.

“What was that for, Starlight? Not that I’m complaining.”

I couldn’t give her an answer. How do you tell someone that they astound you in such a way with their inner fire, passion, and desire so that it sweeps through you like a storm? That you would do anything to make sure that they kept those innermost parts of themselves alight.

So I simply shrugged with a smile on my lips and grabbed her hand.

“Let’s go help the others pack.”

Aylin’s musical laugh filled the air as we joined the others, packing their bags. Everyone lit up at seeing Aylin back to her cheerful self. Dusk set upon us quickly, and with a quick look at our supplies, Triton let Queen Ajlal lead the way toward the nearest entrance to the maze.
